At this point, I've really had enough of SG50 activities, events, stickers, labels, branding and whatever. Every tangible and material item (tissue boxes, pens, envelopes, water bottles, beer cans, you get the picture) has been branded with the bright red and white SG50 logo.
Singapore turns 50 this year and she hasn't allowed us to forget it the moment the year switched out from 2014 to 2015. In fact, half my earnings this year come from rather fun SG50 projects; when I pay income taxes next June, I really shouldn't complain since it's only fair. :p But I can wince at the ginormous resources splurged on fireworks, of which I've never been fascinated with as a child, and certainly not bothered about it now.
We turn 50 like it's a big deal. It is. A tiny little sovereign nation-state that probably wouldn't have survived except for a sheer force of diplomatic and political play, and the tenacity of its people- generations of immigrants who have come to call the island home. If our heart is in this country, then we should seek to improve it and welcome people who want to play nice and share this homeland. We must be realistic though. Small countries tend to be eaten up if they don't yell loud enough or grow firm spikes. Or if their people aren't united in one heart.
